Look up your translation memories for words or phrases outside of memoQ, and copy the contents to the Windows clipboard, and paste the contents in another application.

Important: In order to use the memoQ TM Search tool you need a valid memoQ license on your computer.

Important: If you open the memoQ TM search tool, and you use a TM for your search, and at the same time you want to use the same TM in memoQ, then this TM cannot be used in both applications at the same time. In the TM list in memoQ, it will appear with an orange lightning sign, and when you try to add segments to this TM in memoQ, you will get an error message. Your TM is not corrupted, but you cannot use it in the memoQ TM search tool and in memoQ at the same time. If you open memoQ first, and then want to use the open TMs in the memoQ TM search tool, then these TMs cannot be used in the search. You will get a warning message.

How to begin

Press Ctrl+Shift+Q on your keyboard to start the memoQ TM Search. You can also select the memoQ TM Search from Start > All programs, and then go to memoQ 2014 R2, and choose memoQ TM Search. The memoQ TM Search dialog appears:

Note: Ctrl+Shift+Q works Windows-wide.

Check the Activate the TM search tool whenever I press Ctrl+C check box to automatically copy the content to the clipboard, and search the TMs in the background. Uncheck this check box, the TM search tool is not activated and will not copy selected words or phrases to the clipboard and from there in the Search phrase field.

The memoQ TM Search window starts with the last retrieved clipboard entry. The TM lookups are displayed in a table:

Source and Target search result columns,

and next to it, a column to copy source to clipboard and to copy target to clipboard, simply click the corresponding icon. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+C to copy the source to the clipboard, and Ctrl+Alt+C to copy the target to the clipboard. Press Ctrl+V to paste the contents from the clipboard into another application.

the Match rate from the TM

Enter a search phrase in the Search phrase field, then press Enter, or click the Search button. The search results are displayed.

Click the Search settings button to change or configure the TMs to search:

On the TMs to search tab,

choose the source and target languages for your search. Choose All from the Source language and Target language drop-down lists to search in all your TMs.

check the check boxes in the Search column next to the TM name of the TMs you want to look up.

The table contains all TMs according to the source and target language settings. The TM name is displayed in the Name column, the path/URL in the Path/URL column, and the source and target language of each TM.

On the Search settings tab,

a subset of the TM settings light resource from memoQ is displayed:

Minimum match rate to display hits (%): Use this spin box to enter the minimum percentage needed for a translation memory hit to be qualified as a match. No matches below this percentage will be indicated to the user.

Alignment penalty: Use this spin box to enter the penalty used for segment pairs obtained through alignment.

Inline tag strictness for exact matches: Use this drop-down list to specify the characteristics of a 100% match. You can choose between Strict, Medium and Permissive.  Inline tag strictness indicates how similar the tags should be in the TM to the segment your are translating. Select Strict from the drop-down list when the tags in your TM hit need to be exact to the tags in the segment you are translating (assuming that the tags are the only difference) to get a 100% match.

To learn more about how tag strictness works, see this topic: Tag strictness and match rates

In the TM penalties list, the TM name and the corresponding penalty are displayed.
