Supported source document formats
There are a number of file formats you can import and export in memoQ. The ones described here are monolingual, as opposed to bilingual file formats used to exchange data with other CAT tools or other memoQ users.
The support for different file types is implemented by means of so-called import filters. Whenever you click Import with options on the Documents ribbon, and then choose Change filter and configuration, the Document import settings window opens. Use it to configure individual import filters. Some of the filters offer important customization options.
memoQ currently supports the following monolingual file formats:
- HTML documents (*.html, *.htm)
- Microsoft® Word® 97–2003 documents and Rich Text files (*.doc, *.rtf)
- Microsoft® Office Word® documents (*.docx, *.docx)
- Text files (*.txt, *.inf, *.ini, *.reg, and many more). There is an unstructured and a structured filter for these.
- Microsoft® Excel® 97–2003 files (*.xls, *.xlt)
- Microsoft® Office Excel® files (*.xlsx)
- Microsoft® PowerPoint® 97–2003 files (*.ppt, *.pps, *.pot)
- Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® files (*.pptx, *.potx)
- OpenDocumentText (OpenOffice.org Write; ODT) documents
- Adobe® Framemaker® files (*.mif)
- Adobe® InDesign® INX and IDML files (*.inx, *.idml, *.indd)
- XML and SGML files (*.xml, *.sgml)
- XLIFF files (*xlf; *.xlz)
- .NET resource files (*.resx)
- Portable Document Format (PDF)
- Java properties files (*.properties)
- AuthorIT projects (*.xml)
- DITA documents (*.dita)
- Excel 2003 XML spreadsheets (*.xml)
- FreeMind mindmaps (*.mm)
- Microsoft Visio 2000–2007 files (*.vsd)
- Microsoft Visio files (*.vsdx)
- Microsoft Help Workshop files (*.hhc, *.hhk)
- Scalable Vector Graphics drawings (*.svg)
- Typo3 pages (*.xml)
- JSON (*.json)
- YAML (*.yaml)
- WPML XLIFF files (*.xliff, or no extension)
More filters for one format
For some document formats, memoQ offers several filters. Currently, HTML, XML, Word, Excel and PowerPoint are supported this way.
- In case of HTML, you can choose whether to use the simple HTML filter, that gives you text with meaningless formatting tags – or the simple XML filter that shows the contents of the HTML tags, too.
- For XML, you can use the simple XML filter – or the much more powerful Multilingual XML filter, that lets you use XPath queries to control import.
- With Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, you can choose to import PPT files through the PPTX filter, DOC files with the DOCX filter, and XLS files with the XLSX filter.
- In this case, memoQ first asks PowerPoint to save the PPT file in the PPTX format, and then reads the resulting PPTX file.
- if you have Office 2007 or higher installed
- For Excel files, there is another filter (called Multilingual delimited text filter) that gives you more flexible import options.
