Options - Locations
Under Locations, you can check or change the locations of memoQ folders. These are the folders where memoQ places local projects and checkouts, translation memories, term bases, and others. You may need to change these if you are running low on disk space on your default drive.
Do not change memoQ folders unless it is absolutely necessary; for example, when you are running low of disk space. Even then, it may make more sense to back up projects, and delete the ones you no longer need.
Do not place memoQ folders on network drives. memoQ does not support this, and you may start having problems.
Careful with synchronized cloud storage: If you place these folders in synchronized locations (local copies of Dropbox, Onedrive etc.), memoQ may become slower.
Existing projects and folders will not be moved: If there are already projects and resources on your computer, they stay where they are. If you change the folders, memoQ will use them for new projects and new resources only.
How to get here
- Open the Options window: At the very top of the memoQ window - in the Quick Access toolbar -, click the Options (cogwheels) icon. The Options window opens.
- Under Category, click Locations. The Locations pane appears.
What can you do?
To do this, click the Projects tab.
Normally, memoQ places new projects under your user profile, in a folder in your Documents folder. You can change this under Projects folder.
- To change to a custom folder outside your user profile: Click Custom folder. Type or paste the path of a folder, or click the Browse button, and find it in an Open window. Use this option only if you are the only user of the computer.
- To change to a folder in your Documents folder: Click User profile +. Type or paste the name of the folder you want to use. Or, click the Browse button, and find it in an Open window. Normally, memoQ places projects here, in a folder called My memoQ projects. Change this only if you need a shorter folder name.
There is also a folder for archived projects. This is where deleted projects go. To see these projects, use the Dashboard, and switch to the Recycle bin. Normally, these are in the same folder as normal projects, but in another folder called Recycle bin. You can change this under Archived projects folder:
- To change to a custom folder outside the normal project folder: Click Custom folder. Type or paste the path of a folder, or click the Browse button, and find it in an Open window.
- To change to a different folder in your normal project folder: Click Projects folder +. Type or paste the name of the folder you want to use. Or, click the Browse button, and find it in an Open window. Normally, memoQ places deleted projects here, in a folder called Recycle bin. Change this only if you need a shorter folder name.
You can also use this pane to check the folder paths - so that you can include them when you make a full backup of your computer. When you back these folders up outside memoQ, make sure you restore them to the exact same folder on a new computer. (You will need to use the exact same user name, too.)
To do this, click the Resources tab.
The resources you use in projects are not stored with the projects. They are stored outside the projects, and outside your user profile. As a result, one resource can be used in several projects on the same computer. A resource can also be used by several different users on the same computer if there are several users. However, a resource can be open in one project by one user at a time.
You can change the location of translation memories, term bases, LiveDocs corpora, and Muses separately. Type or choose a folder for each of these in the boxes at the top. Or, click the Browse button, and find a folder in an Open window.
For all other resources, there is one single folder. Change this folder in the Light resources box. Type or choose a folder, or click the Browse button, and find a folder in an Open window.
It is not recommended to change these folders: Do it only if you are running low on disk space.
Do not place these folders on network drives. This is not supported. If you need to share translation memories or other resources with others, consider using Language Terminal, a memoQ cloud, or memoQ server for that.
If you are importing documents from a folder structure with a lot of nested folders, or with folders and documents with long names, memoQ may fail to import some of the documents - because the overall path of a working file becomes too long.
When documents are imported, memoQ uses the system's temporary (temp) folder for complex processing. Normally, this folder is deep down in your user profile, and it may cause the paths to become too long. You can use a folder with a shorter path here. Example: C:\Temp.
To specify this folder, click the Temporary folder tab.
Check the Use custom temporary folder check box. Type or paste the path to the folder in the Location box. The folder must exist before you specify it here.
When you install memoQ on your computer, a copy of the Help content is installed. This content stays the same – but our online Help is updated and improved all the time. It also has more topics (mostly related to memoQ TMS and its web interfaces). You can choose which one should open when you click a Help button or press F1 in memoQ.
In versions 9.0 and newer, memoQ normally uses the online help. If you need to work without an internet connection, clear the Use online help check box. memoQ will show the built-in help.

- Default resources: Choose default resources (segmentation rules, QA settings, ignore lists etc.) for new projects. Do not mix these with resources in project templates. If you create a project from a template, memoQ will use the settings from the template, and not from these options.
- Appearance: Font and color settings for the translation editor and the Translation results pane. Use this to make the translation editor more readable.
- Spelling and grammar: Open this to set up the spell checker. Choose to use Word or Hunspell. If you choose Hunspell, you can download and install new dictionaries. Set up the spell checker for every target language you work with.
- Advanced lookup settings: Choose how memoQ should offer automatic concordance results, and how it should put together suggestions from fragments (shorter translation memory units and terms). Do not change the defaults unless you are entirely certain that you will get better suggestions as a result. If you just tamper with these settings, you may lose productivity. To learn more about these types of suggestions, see Help about the Translation results pane.
- Keyboard shortcuts: Choose or edit keyboard shortcuts for frequent commands in memoQ. Do not change these before you learn to use memoQ thoroughly. After you change keyboard shortcuts, the Help pages may not help you find them.
- Locations: Check or change the locations of memoQ folders. These are the folders memoQ places local projects and checkouts, translation memories, term bases, and others.
