Resource Console - Muses
A Muse is a resource – a statistical database – that offers hints for predictive typing.
A Muse guesses the next work or expression, computing from the source text and the translation that was already typed. In a way, the Muse is similar to a statistical machine translation module, but it can be more precise - because it does not have to guess an entire sentence, just the next few words.
Muses can be local resources only. You cannot share them on a memoQ server or on a memoQ cloud. You need to export a muse in one copy of memoQ and import it in another.
A Muse is bilingual: In a project, you can use a Muse if it has the same language pair as your project.
How to get here
- In the top left corner of the memoQ window, click the Resource console icon. The Resource console window opens.
- Under Resource, click Muses. The Muses pane appears.
What can you do?
memoQ will use the contents of translation memories and LiveDocs corpora to compute statistics, so that memoQ can use the Muse to guess the next one or two words.
Make sure that the contents of the translation memories or the LiveDocs corpora are closely connected to the source materials that you need to work on.
- At the bottom, click Create new.
- The Create Muse window opens. memoQ will automatically create a Muse between the project's source language and the selected target language.
- Type a name for the Muse.
- At the bottom of the window, you can fill in other details.

- Click OK.
- The Train Muse window opens. Choose translation memories and LiveDocs corpora: memoQ will use the contents of these to compute the statistics in the Muse.
If you are creating the Muse on a memoQ server: To train an online Muse, you must choose from translation memories and LiveDocs corpora on the same server. You cannot use your local translation memories or LiveDocs corpora. To use the contents of a local translation memory or LiveDocs corpus, you must share them on the server first.
- Click OK. The Muse is created when the training finishes.
Normally, memoQ will show Muses from your own computer. However, you can manage online Muses from memoQ servers that you have access to.
To view the Muses from a memoQ server or from a memoQ cloud:
- At the top of the Resource console window, click the Server URL dropdown.

Type or choose the address of the memoQ server, and click the Select button.
You may need to log in to the memoQ server: If you have not used the server before, the Log in to server window opens. Type your user name and password for that server, and click OK.
- memoQ will show the Muses from that server and from your computer (those never disappear).
Online Muses have the cloud icon, and the server is shown next to them:
You must have permission for the Muses: It is not enough to have access to the memoQ server. To use a Muse, you need at least Lookup permission over the Muse itself. If you are not sure, contact the owner of the memoQ server.
Now you can create or edit Muses on the server, or perform other actions on them. You need permissions over the Muses to do so.
Normally, memoQ shows online Muses only if their server is selected in the Server URL box.
However, if you frequently use a Muse, you can pin it to the list. To pin an online Muse to the list, click the empty cell at the left of its row:
When a Muse is pinned to the list, it shows a pin in that cell:
When you select another server or My Computer in the Server URL box, the pinned Muse remains on the list.
If there are too many Muses on the list, you can filter the list. At the top of the Muses pane, there are filter controls:
- The most efficient way to filter the list is to type a word or two in the Name/description box. It will narrow the list immediately to those Muses that have those words in their names or descriptions.
- You can filter the list for Muses with a certain source language and/or a target language.
- You can also choose from the basic details (Project, Client, Domain, Subject - if they are filled in for all or most of the corpora), and the from the languages in the Muses. For example, you may be interested in Muses that contain documents for the client called 'memoQLtd', have translations into French, and the word 'Legal' is in their names.
When you make a selection in one of the boxes, memoQ filters the list immediately.
To sort the list by a detail: Click the header of the column you need. For example, to sort the list by name, click the Name header at the top of the list.
You can export an entire translation memory into a compressed file. The file has the .mqm (memoQ Muse) extension. The exported file can be imported into another copy of memoQ. The other copy of memoQ should be the same version.
To export a Muse:
- In the list, select the translation memory you need to export.
- At the bottom, click Export. A Save As window opens.
- Find a folder and a name for the file, and click Save. memoQ will export all details from the Muse in the file.
You can import an .mqm file as a new Muse.
To import an .mqm as a Muse:
- At the bottom, click Import. An Open window appears.
- Select one .mqm file. Click Open.
If there is a lot of new text that goes into translation memories and LiveDocs corpora, you can update the related Muse by retraining it.
To retrain a Muse:
- In the list, click the Muse.
- At the bottom, click Retrain.
- The Train Muse window opens. Choose translation memories and LiveDocs corpora: memoQ will use the contents of these to compute the statistics in the Muse.
- Click OK. memoQ will practically re-create the Muse from the new contents.
To view the properties of a Muse:
- In the list, select the Muse.
- At the bottom, click Properties. The Muse properties window opens.
In the Muse properties window, you can change the basic details of the Muse.
If the Muse is on a memoQ server: To train an online Muse, you must choose from translation memories and LiveDocs corpora on the same server. You cannot use your local translation memories or LiveDocs corpora. To use the contents of a local translation memory or LiveDocs corpus, you must share them on the server first.
After you put together a Muse on your computer, you can share them on a memoQ server that you have access to.
- In the Server URL box, choose the server. Click Select. Log in to the server if necessary.
- Find the local Muse on the list. Select it.
A local Muse is marked by a computer icon.
- Under the list, click Share on Server. The Share resource on server window opens.
- You may choose a different name for the online copy of the Muse, and you may also delete the local Muse after it is shared. Make your choices, and click OK.
memoQ will copy the Muse to the selected server, and make it available there, with the default permissions.
To remove a Muse from a server:
- In the Server URL box, choose the server. Click Select. Log in to the server if necessary.
- In the list, find the Muse you need to remove. Select it.
- Under the first list, click Remove from server. The Remove Muse from server window opens.
This command will not simply remove the Muse from the server: it will copy the Muse to your computer.
- You may choose a different name for the Muse, and you may also keep the online Muse after it is "removed". Make your choices, and click OK.
memoQ will copy the Muse to your computer.
Online Muses are normally published. This means that they are accessible through the memoQ server.
However, you can unpublish a Muse:
- In the Server URL box, choose the server. Click Select. Log in to the server if necessary.
- Find the Muse on the list.
- Right-click the Muse, and choose Unpublish.
After you unpublish a Muse, it will still be stored on the server, but it will not be accessible. Users cannot use it in projects. To publish it again, right-click it, and choose Publish.
Admin permission needed: To change the permissions over a Muse, you need the Admin permission over it.
To change who can do what with an online Muse, do this:
- In the Server URL box, choose the server. Click Select. Log in to the server if necessary.
- Find the Muse on the list. Select it.
- Under the first list, click Set Permissions. The Permissions window opens.
- Choose the users or groups who can access the Muse, and set their access levels. Add an expiry date to each permission if necessary. Click OK.
When you finish
To work with another type of resource: Under Resource, choose another category.
To return to your work: Switch to the memoQ main window. Press and hold down Alt, and press Tab, until you get to the memoQ main window. Or, on the Windows taskbar, click the memoQ icon, then click the memoQ main window. The Resource Console stays open.
Or, you can close the Resource Console: Click Close.
If you opened a translation memory, a term base, or a LiveDocs document for editing: Switch to the memoQ main window (or close the Resource console), and then go to the editor tab.
