Resources

memoQ handles all data that influence your translation experience in an uniform way. You will probably find that translation memories and term bases have the biggest impact on your translation productivity, but if you got used to working in another environment, continuing to use your keyboard shortcuts can also speed up your work. Only memoQ's resource concept enables you to configure an environment for somebody else.

By definition, resources are pieces of information or data that are regularly used during translation or translation management, significantly affect some aspects of the work done in memoQ (efficiency, translation quality, etc.), and are good candidates to be reused in other projects or shared in a project team or otherwise.

Through memoQ's unique resource concept, you can do the following:

  • share all your resources with peers, either through files or a server,
  • create and edit new resources, either from scratch or based on existing resources,
  • easily find the right resources to use in a project.

All the resource exchange formats in memoQ are XML-based. Where appropriate, memoQ Zrt. used the corresponding open standards.

Sharing all resources with another translator means that the other translator has the exact same working environment as you do. memoQ's project management features enable you to set up the working environment for somebody else, so the other person can start translating instantly.

The resources handled by memoQ are:

  • translation memories that store segment pairs
  • term bases that store words and expressions
  • LiveDocs corpora that store reference documents, including earlier translated document pairs
  • Muses that provide smart predictive typing suggestions based on the source text and earlier translations
  • auto-translation rules that enable the easy translation of patterns like dates, number formats, or references to legislation
  • AutoCorrect lists that turn abbreviations into full versions as you type
  • non-translatable lists that contain expressions that are not to be translated
  • ignore lists that tell your spell checker what expressions to skip
  • segmentation rules that define how a newly imported text is split up into segments
  • filter configurations that define how to import new documents
  • export path rules that define the name and location of the exported files, and are especially useful for multi-file projects
  • QA settings that define what quality assurance checks memoQ needs to perform
  • TM settings that define what qualifies as a translation memory match
  • LiveDocs settings that define what qualifies as a corpus match
  • stop word lists that define what words should be ignored during terminology extraction
  • keyboard shortcuts that bind functionality to certain shortcut keys
  • web search settings that allow you to customize the websites you wish to use for searching from within memoQ
  • LQA settings that let you choose the linguistic quality model for your projects
  • font substitution settings that allow you to change the font for the translated documents on export
  • project templates for project creation to speed up your project creation process and to automate steps
  • MT settings that define allow you to customize machine translation services

Resources are managed either through the Resource console or from Project home.

Note: In this documentation, we speak of heavy resources when we speak about translation memories, LiveDocs corpora, Muses and term bases, and we refer to light resources when we speak about the other resources.

Light resources

memoQ has two kinds of resources: heavy resources such as translation memories and term bases and light resources. Light resources include

When a new project is created, it will use the default resources.

You can work with online light resources even when you work offline. When you are working with server resources and want to work offline, always go to the memoQ menu, choose Resources, and then click Update Online Resources. You can go offline after you do this.
