memoQ Help - Import/update bilingual

At times you need to export a bilingual file, for example a memoQ XLIFF file to be processed in another tool, or a two-column RTF for a reviewer who does not use a translation environment tool such as memoQ. The translator or reviewer makes changes to the file and sends you the file back. You can import the file back into your project. memoQ recognizes the file and updates the existing file(s) in your project.

How to begin

In the Dashboard, open an existing project. On the Documents ribbon tab, click the lower part of the Import command, then choose Import with options. The Open dialog appears.

Use

1.In the Open dialog, find the bilingual files you need to import or update, and then click Open. The Document import options dialog appears.

2.memoQ detects the type of the document, and chooses the filter automatically. The selected filter is shown in the Filter drop-down list. Here you can also change the filter, or click the Change filter and configuration command link to make adjustments to the filter. (When memoQ looks for a segment to update, it does not compare the text: it looks for a numeric ID instead – whenever that is possible.)

3.In the Action drop-down list, the action for the document is shown: Import as new, or Update a document.

memoQ knows which document you are updating: In addition to the document type, memoQ also identifies the document itself, and finds the document you need to update.

If you are updating a document – that is, if memoQ finds a document that can be updated –, you will see further options at the bottom of the Document import options dialog.

For bilingual (Trados) RTF documents:

Do not update if source segment is different: By default, memoQ will not update a segment where the source text is different in the memoQ project and in the imported document. Clear this check box if you want these segments to be updated.

For bilingual XLIFF documents:

•Use received segmentation if possible: By default, memoQ will update the segmentation from the new document, too. Clear this check box if you do not want memoQ to change the segmentation in the existing document. In this case, some segments may not get updated.

The language pair must fully match, including the sublanguages: For example, when your project is English-German, but your XLIFF files go from English (US) into German (Germany), you will not be able to import these XLIFF files. Even the sublanguages must match.

For bilingual table RTF (or multi-column RTF) documents:

•Tags must have mqInternal style: memoQ will import formatting and inline tags from bilingual table RTF documents (because these documents come from memoQ, the logic of tags in the RTF documents is the same as in memoQ itself). If you check this check box, anything formatted in the mqInternal style will be imported as a tag.

Brackets [] and curly braces {} matter: By default, memoQ does not watch for the mqInternal style. Instead, it will import anything between curly brackets {} as a formatting tag, and anything between brackets [] as an inline tags. Because the brackets and the curly braces can also be legitimate characters in the text, make sure you check them in Word before you import the document. If an opening bracket has a back slash (\) before it, that part will be imported as it is (and not as a tag). Example: '[Byggnadseffektivitet]' will import as an inline tag, while '\[Byggnadseffektivitet]' will import as normal text.
